| Check ride anxiety is some of the most intense performance anxiety I have encountered. This is no doubt due to the pressure from the “pass or don’t fly” nature of the test. I know of no other occupation where you have to pass a test every six months to keep your job. Anyone who has ever observed a check ride in a simulator knows how well-trained pilots are, but sometimes even the best pilots fail the check ride because they lock up due to anxiety. Usually the pilot feels a lot of shame. However, this problem is not uncommon. I have worked with pilots from American, American Eagle, Continental, Delta, Mesa, Midwest, Northwest, Southwest, United, and US Airways. I mostly work with pilots who have busted a check ride, but I have worked with several just to lower their anxiety while testing even though they had never failed a check ride. If you have anxiety every time you have a check ride there is definitely something that can be done about it. Most pilots with whom I work are shocked at how big a difference it can make knowing how to manage the anxiety of check rides. And it doesn’t take long – usually from 2 to 4 one hour sessions. Sometimes I will see pilots for an initial session of 2 hours (with a follow up if needed) because they have to fly in from out of state. If you have busted a check ride, or simply would like to be more comfortable when you take one, call me and discuss your options. All information is strictly confidential. |
